Designing remotely

In August 2020 Pringle & Pringle’s first client got back in contact with us about an exciting new project. He and his partner were planning to build a new home on the Isle of Arran and they wanted our help with the interiors. Working with previous clients is always a joy as we know so much about them already, what they like and dislike and what is important to them in life. Due to Covid restrictions we weren’t able to travel up there so we had to design remotely but between the client and P&P we decided on a brief that incorporated colours from the natural surroundings and design with sustainability in mind.

The client sent us photos they had taken of the view from the house plot and we researched the island to get our colour palette. We had the floor plans from the architect so that we could work to scale.

At first we had hoped to source furniture locally but because we were in the middle of a pandemic we couldn’t go and meet new suppliers and check the quality of the products and even if we had been able to fly up and down this wouldn’t have been a sustainable option either. So we decided to approach it in a different way and select products that had a low environmental impact and have them delivered to our white glove team who would receive all the deliveries, store them and install them in one day once the house was ready.

We have used a selection of beautifully made products that will last a lifetime including some design classic pieces, mixed in with hand crafted furniture and fabrics from companies that strive to be at the forefront of sustainable textiles such as de La Cuona and Rapture & Wright. The walls in the main living room are painted with the limewash paint Bauwerk which are made from natural materials. We also sourced antiques and used some of the client’s existing furniture from another property which is not only good for the environment but also gives a timeless feel to the design.

We look forward to sharing more about this project after our return in September to photograph it.
